Lots of people have lots of questions while thinking about doing a yoga teacher training. Here are some common questions we hear about SYU Level 1. If you’d like us to add another answer to a question not listed here, send us a message on Facebook or drop us an email at

I’m not really an “advanced” yoga student yet. How much experience should I have before I begin yoga teacher training?

Believe it or not, some students come to Scholé Yoga University without trying a single Scholé Yoga class. They have heard about Scholé and want to learn more. Maybe they are working through a personal life challenge, or maybe they’re just looking to meet more people who love yoga. This is exactly who SYU is for – anyone and everyone who wants to learn and deepen their understanding of the practice of yoga. The SYU curriculum is designed to support growth for both brand new and existing teachers to help everyone find challenge and success. Often, the students who are newest to yoga emerge as the most powerful and transformative teachers, and they definitely experience rapid growth as experts in yoga through commitment to the course of study and practice.

The only prerequisite for SYU Level 1 is the desire to learn. You don’t need to know a single pose – we’ll get there together and support you all along the way.

I don’t really know anyone who would want to come with me. Is there a support system at SYU?

Most students come to SYU on their own, which makes it the perfect place to meet new friends who share a deep interest in yoga. Students quickly form lifelong friendships that last throughout training and beyond. At SYU, people come together to help each other succeed, creating an empowering community of support for SYU students. The course facilitators will help provide you with both structure and freedom to find growth, and students can also schedule additional time with facilitators for private instruction if they feel they need more time outside the course schedule.

How is SYU different than other yoga study programs?

SYU is one of the most comprehensive and academically rigorous yoga programs in the world. Whereas most yoga schools teach a script or set of required postures, SYU covers a wide range of topics from classical meditation, anatomy, and wellness practices to the culmination of it all - the Scholé Yoga system. We're fully digital - you can submit your homework from anywhere and we integrate multimedia features into our textbooks to enhance your learning. Our modern educational software and techniques will systematically immerse you in the art and science of yoga to allow for deep learning and lasting change.

SYU not only prepares you to teach transformative Scholé Yoga classes, but also prepares you with the skillset to continue to refine your classes with creative, insightful sequences throughout your teaching career.

Can I enroll in SYU if I don’t think I ever want to teach yoga?

Anyone and everyone can enrich their life at Scholé Yoga University. Whether you are interested in deepening your personal practice or you feel the call to teach, enrolling at SYU is a transformative experience. Our courses empower students to break through old habits and make lasting change, not just on the mat, but in everyday life as well. The overarching philosophy and purpose of SYU is to introduce others to the healing power of yoga to support a healthier, happier way of life. Some students who begin thinking they will never teach yoga emerge as some of our strongest teachers.

When you study something that you plan to share in some way, you absorb it on a much deeper level. In each SYU session we practice yoga, participate in discourses on yoga philosophy as well as various teaching methodologies, and take part in group exercises and practical teaching.

This interactive educational methodology immerses students in the practice of yoga in a way that builds tremendous personal strength and self-confidence. You will build and refine real world skills such as public speaking, giving and receiving feedback, teamwork, and using clear and simple directions. At the end of the course you will leave with a stronger, more flexible body and a calmer, clearer mind, as well as the skill set and resources to achieve any goal.

What will I learn in SYU Level 1?

The Scholé system is part of a true living lineage of yoga that goes back more than 5,000 years. From this foundation, we share the practice and study of classical Raja and Vipassana meditation, as well as Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga and its evolution over time into the various schools of Hot Yoga, Power Yoga, and Yin Yoga. Students will learn to guide the foundational Scholé styles of MEDITATE, RESTORE and IGNITE.

We also emphasize and explore a more contemporary understanding of human anatomy and physiology, as well as aspects of modern strength training, pilates, dance, martial arts and other systems of movement. Ultimately, we show you how to combine all of these teachings together into the practice of Scholé Yoga, the organic outgrowth and next step in the yoga tradition.

How long is the SYU Level 1 course?

The SYU Level 1 course is five weeks long. The course meets as a group every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am – 6:00pm at XCEL Fitness, an officially licensed Scholé partner facility.

What if I have to miss a weekend of SYU?

Students who begin with a pending absence often discover that they don’t want to miss a moment and reschedule their conflict, but even if your situation cannot be adjusted, we’ll figure out a way to keep everything in balance.

In order to accommodate religious obligations, vacations, work travel, illness, and other scheduling needs, each student can miss up to 10% of the group hours without penalty. To ensure you graduate with knowledge of all course material, additional absences must be made up through private instruction with a course facilitator. Facilitators can discuss your personal needs to work out a solution that ensures you will still be able to cover all of the SYU course curriculum.

What credentials do graduates receive?

Everyone who successfully completes the course is awarded “Scholé Level 1 Certification,” a high distinction that carries considerable esteem at yoga studios, gyms, and fitness facilities worldwide. Scholé Level 1 Certified teachers are able to guide official MEDITATE, RESTORE, and IGNITE classes and are also eligible for free job placement and career counseling services through the SYU Office of Professional Development.

Level 1 graduates also receive 100 hours of Yoga Alliance credit that can be applied towards a 200 or 500 hour RYT designation. For new teachers, successful completion of SYU Level 1 and 2 automatically grants Yoga Alliance RYT 200 certification, while existing teachers who complete Levels 1, 2 and 3 become eligible for RYT 500 status. Yoga Alliance certification is the most respected and recognized yoga registry in the world, and is required by virtually all employers and insurance agencies worldwide.

Even better, unlike most yoga certification programs that are created and taught by one or two people at a single studio, or teach you just to guide a specific. limited format focused on a predetermined program, Scholé Certification Courses are the product of decades of study, peer review, and refinement. As a result, they are well known for consistently producing extremely gifted, creative, and professional teachers. As a result, being “Scholé Certified” means a great deal more than just being “yoga certified” and will open doors and create amazing new opportunities worldwide.

What happens after graduation?

We're a yoga family and we want to make sure we do everything we can to help you achieve your goals while helping others through the practice and teachings of yoga.
